You Are So Beautiful - Here's Why

This is for the girl who doesn't feel beautiful, or for the girl who just needs to be reminded of a few freeing truths about herself.

Beauty. I think we all long to be effortlessly and flawlessly beautiful. We spend a crazy amount of money on skincare, makeup, hair products, and self-tan just to accomplish whatever "effortless" beauty look that's currently trending, or just to feel a little better about ourselves.

It takes a TON of time and effort to find the perfect products that suit our complicated hair and skin types, not to mention the countless YouTube tutorials we watched just to achieve that perfect winged eyeliner. The worst part is, the standard for beauty is constantly changing. It can be hard to keep up.

Now don't get me wrong, I love me some skincare and self-tan. I don't think there's anything wrong with taking care of your skin or enhancing your natural, God-given beauty.

But I have found that it's so easy to base our beauty on things that constantly change. This puts us in a place of repeated, or sometimes even constant insecurity.

For example, you FINALLY got your skin to clear up. It took some hardcore self-discipline to cut out sugar and workout 5 days in a row, but you did it! ....And then a few days later your period comes. The breakouts. The bloating. The bad hair days. Yikes. Just like that, your back to feeling insecure and less than beautiful.

Before I get into WHY I know for a fact YOU are beautiful, I want to point out a few more of these constantly changing things that you and I have a tendency to base our beauty on. Here's just to name a few:

  • Social media likes and comments

  • Weight/body image

  • Clear skin

  • Compliments

  • Attention

  • If we have a boyfriend telling us we're beautiful

  • If we have a guy that's interested in us

  • If our husband told us we're beautiful today

  • Good hair and makeup days

  • Clothes

  • Cultural standards

  • Models & Influencers we compare ourselves to

I want you to notice that each of these things change almost daily. If we base our beauty, even unintentionally, on any of these, we will be in a constant battle to keep up.

Maybe that's where you are right now. Maybe you're struggling with not feeling pretty enough. Maybe you're tired of trying so hard. I know that I personally have found myself in this place so often.

I'm here to tell you sweet girl that you are so beautiful.

Just the way you are.

No makeup, no filters, just genuine you.

You might be wondering how I know that because we aren't actually sitting down having coffee together (even though I wish we were). I can't see you, so how do I know?

Carefully Created

First, I know you are beautiful because I know for a fact that you were made in the image of God. Genesis 1:27 says: "God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." And Psalm 139:13 says: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb."

You might be familiar with those verses, but really think about them for a second. We know from observing God's character that He is perfect and does not make mistakes. Everything He creates is so detailed, complex, and absolutely beautiful. The flowers, the stars, you and me. All of creation is so complex, beautiful, and made by a perfect God who doesn't mess up.

And so were you. You were made in the image of the God of the universe. You bear His image. Just like a daughter has certain features of her father, you were created in the image of your Heavenly Father. You look like God.

Not only are you God's image-bearer, we also see in Psalm 139:13 that He knit you together. Knitting takes time and concentration. It's a care-filled art. God carefully created you and all of your unique features, personality, and everything that makes you you, even down to your inmost being.

Not only do you look different than anyone on this earth, you even have a fingerprint unlike any other. That tells me God knows you intimately. That you look the way you look and are the way you are because God designed YOU that way. Even a small feature like your fingerprint is unique to only you.

Wonderfully Made

One of my favorite verses is Psalm 139:14:

"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful; I know that full well."

You are wonderfully made. God created you just the way you are, and His Word says the way you were made is wonderful. Why? Because of the One who created you. God's works are wonderful, and you are one of His works.

Ephesians 2:10 says: "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Another translation of the word "handiwork" is masterpiece. You were handcrafted like a work of art by the Creator of the universe.

The culture doesn't get to tell you you aren't beautiful. Neither does that guy you like or people around you. The only One who's opinion really matters is the One who created you, and God thinks you are beautiful. Not only that, He made you for His glory and for a specific purpose.

Romans 12:6 says: "We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us."

God even gave you unique gifts to use to make a difference in this world for His glory. To share His love and gift of eternal life with a broken, dying world.

Beauty in Differences

How amazing is it that God created you unlike anyone else. You are beautifully, uniquely YOU. I love seeing the differences in people. All of my family and friends are all so different, but to me it is so beautiful. Straight hair, curly hair, wavy hair, all the different colors. Eye color, skin color, personality types. All of the different gifts people have been given and even the different sounds of people's voices.

Have you noticed that everyone even has a different laugh? I think it's so sweet that things like laughter and joy are even a thing - God wanted us to laugh and be joyful. I think it also says something about God that everyone has different laughs. Even people with those weird, loud sounding ones. The people who snort. God created them that way, and He thinks they are wonderful. He loves their laughs.

How amazing are human beings? Even our different body types are absolutely beautiful to God. Aren't you glad we all don't look the exact same? That would be so boring! God is the Great Designer. His works truly are wonderful.

Your Truest Beauty

So to summarize, you are absolutely beautiful because God created you just the way you are in His image. You have unique, beautiful features that are unlike anyone else. You have a different fingerprint, personality, gifts, and sound to your voice. God knows you intimately and created you wonderfully.

I think one of the best ways to overcome insecurity is to draw near to God. He somehow completely changes your view on beauty. I know for me, insecurity has been a life-long struggle. But I have found that as I have grown in my relationship with my Creator and lean into the truths in His Word, I find freedom from my insecurities and actually appreciate the way I was made.

When I walk closely with God, I am constantly reminded of who I am and my identity in Christ. I am His daughter. I bear His image. I am unique. He loves me, died for me to save me, and is preparing a place for me in Heaven with Him. Until then, He has a purpose for me to use my unique gifts He has given me to bring other people closer to Him. What incredible truths. And the same is true for you.

I want you to look in the mirror and tell yourself you are beautiful. Take off your makeup and really look at yourself and see the way God made you. Notice the color of your eyes, lips, hair, and skin. Write down all the unique features of your physical appearance, and thank God for them.

Write down all the different aspects of your personality and the gifts God has given you. Thank Him for your uniqueness and the way He created you unlike anyone else. Thank Him for your true, genuine beauty.

Another thing I want to leave with you is this. I think a lot of times we can allow Satan to steal our joy by flooding our minds with the lies of insecurity and worthlessness.

Sometimes it takes a daily choice to base your beauty on the unshakeable truths of the verses we talked about above. When you hear that voice lying to you, telling you you aren't beautiful or as pretty as that other person, don't listen.

Remind yourself that God thinks you are a masterpiece. You bear HIS image, and you are wonderfully made. Choose to believe that you are beautiful just the way you are. You might even have to stop and pray. Ask God to help you in those moments overcome your insecurity and truly see the beauty He has given you.

Another important thing to remember is that you are so much more than your outward appearance. 1 Peter 3:3 says: "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight."

Your inner self is where your true beauty shines through. When you are rooted in Christ and walking closely with Him, not only will you be confident in the outward beauty He gave you, but you will also be inwardly beautiful. And that's the beauty that God cares about.

Be Free

The last thing I want to leave with you is this: Let yourself be free. I'm praying that the verses and truths we just talked about will break those chains of insecurity and allow you to live and be all that YOU were created to be. In all the gorgeous, unique beauty you have inside and out.

Be free from culture's expectations. Be free from the comparison we can so easily fall into. Be free from relying on other people's opinions of you. Be free and accept yourself just the way you are, as a beautifully created daughter of God.

You are so beautiful. Read that again.

Always here for you,
